Spiderman 3

Well, we went to see Spiderman 3 last night, and for anyone who hasn't yet seen it - and who's wondering whether they should - I have this advice.

Don't bother.

If you're not a devoted fan of Spiderman you'll spend two hours wondering why you went, and probably being distracted by Tobey Macquire's double chin (I know I was. Which is unfair, as he's in a lot better shape than me.)

If you are a devoted Spiderman fan, you'll be disappointed at the lack of character depth in all the characters. The film was too long, but needed another hour to do justice to the plot. Which would have made it interminably long. Characters were introduced in a hap-hazard fashion, and most of the plot elements lent nothing to their overall development. Most of the characters were either introduced as one dimensional stereotypes, or were reduced to them. On the other hand Parker's transition from Geek-Parker to Evil Emo-a-like-Parker was bizarre, and raised a few laughs from the audience.

The film lacked a pace, and tension. It never seemed to hit its stride, and the plot never seemed to flow. There were some brilliant moments, one of which almost had me jumping out of my seat, but that could be because I'd just woken up - sadly most of the film seemed to lack purpose.

In short, they chose the wrong plot, and didn't realise in time that it wasn't going to work out. To be honest, I'd have preferred it if they'd split the film into two parts.

All this leaves me with an impending sense of doom about Pirates of the Caribbean 3; and my only hope for decent blockbuster films this summer is now Transformers. Although the Fantastic Four may yet surprise me.
